Unable to install ColdFire extension? Drag/drop .xpi to add-ons, do NOT open directly!
10/26/07 9:18 AM
I was unable to install the ColdFire extension by following the installation instructions, and although the solution was simple, it took me a while to figure it out. The extension simply wasn't installing for me, so there wasn't even a "ColdFusion" tab appearing in Firebug for me. In short, the trick is to drag the .xpi file and drop it onto an open Firefox Add-ons window, as opposed to using File/Open method as instructed by the ColdFire "install.[doc/pdf]" document.
After pulling my hair out for a bit, I narrowed my problem down to the fact that the extension simply was not installing properly (Nathan Mische's troubleshooting information at http://www.mischefamily.com/nathan/index.cfm/2007/10/1/How-ColdFire-Works helped me quickly confirm this).
It was also odd that, rather than being asked to restart Firefox after opening the .xpi file ("/dist/coldfire_v1.001.xpi" in the case of the version 1.001 download), I just saw this text in the center of my browser window: "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.8) Gecko/20071008 Firefox/2.0.0.8"
So, rather than researching ColdFire problems, I began researching Firefox extension installation problems (I Google'd "Firefox unable to open xpi file"). I quickly found my answer at: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_-_Firefox#Downloaded_theme_or_extension_will_not_install
Here, it plainly stated that you should *not* try to open .xpi files directly, which is how the ColdFire installation instructions currently read. In Firefox, I went to Tools/Add-ons to open an add-ons window, made sure the Extensions tab was selected (not sure if this is required, but just to be safe), then simply dragged the "coldfire_v1.001.xpi" file and dropped it onto the Add-ons window. I clicked the Install button and the ColdFire extension to Firebug was quickly installed and I was asked to restart Firefox. ColdFire then worked immediately (I'd already completed the other installation step of dropping the coldfire.cfm file into my /WEB-INF/debug folder and selecting it from my CF Admin; also already had Firebug installed).
So, maybe this extension installation knowledge is common to others, maybe this only affects Windows users... I'm not sure, but following the simple installation instructions very closely did not allow me to install ColdFire. Maybe others can comment on whether this is the one way that downloaded .xpi files should be installed in Firefox (Linux/Mac users)? If so, maybe the ColdFire instructions can be quickly edited to reflect this information?
I hope this helps others save a little time and frustration installing this fine tool ;-)
Thanks a bunch to the ColdFire team for putting this out there to the CF community!
Best, Jamie

RE: Unable to install ColdFire extension? Drag/drop .xpi to add-ons, do NOT open directly!

Quick update: the File/Open method of installing the .xpi file worked fine for a friend with the same basic laptop configuration, but it certainly didn't work for me! Who knows, but it seems that the drag/drop to an add-ons window is the method that should work for everybody, so may still be worth an update to the installation doc.
Better yet, any chance the latest extension will be listed at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ and allow for Firefox to automatically check for updates?
Thanks again, guys!
Best, Jamie
